Great Crested Newt Surveying

biT's Ecologists carry out Great Crested Newt surveys, ensuring that our wildlife is protected and our clients are fully compliant with the law that protects this species.

During the Great Crested Newt (GCN) survey season (March to June), biT Ecologists are out and about, carrying out surveys, ensuring that our wildlife is protected and our clients are fully compliant with the law that protects this species.

The Great Crested Newt is fully protected under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017 (as amended) and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, as amended. The repercussions of non compliance with this law are very serious and can result in fines of up to £5000 or 6 months imprisonment.

Therefore if you are looking to develop land where there is a pond within 500m (the recognised migration distance of the GCN) an assessment should be undertaken to assess the suitability of ponds to support GCN and for the presence of suitable habitat on site.

Let’s talk newts

As Great Crested Newts are a protected species, they and their eggs, breeding sites and resting places are protected by law. You would be breaking the law if you:

  • Deliberately captured, killed, disturbed or injured GCN
  • Damaged or destroyed a breeding or resting place
  • Obstructed access to their habitats (deliberately or negligently)
  • Sold or transported live or dead newts or parts of them
  • Took GCN eggs

There are many activities which can harm these creatures which include, maintaining or restoring ponds, woodland, scrub or rough grassland and removing dense vegetation and disturbing the ground.

Building and development work can also harm them and their habitats if the work carried out includes removing or making their habitat unsuitable, changes the water table, increases the numbers of people, traffic and pollutants in the area among other impacts.

How can biT Ecologists help you?

Our team are available to carry out your surveys and help you identify any issues that may arise as a result of the GCN survey.  We will then work with you to make sure that you fully understand your responsibilities and offer workable, reasonable solutions to any constraints identified.
